Original sparkle movie soundtrack 197612/28/2023 ![]() It’s representative of what limits the whole disc: “Sparkle” could use more of it. While the song itself has some zip, ultimately it sounds like a Kool and the Gang knockoff mixed with a Coke commercial. The duet with Sparks on “Celebrate” gives the younger singer the flashiest bits, though Whitney’s responses have more soul. “His Eye Is on the Sparrow” finds her stuck in melisma-mode, without the range to dig herself out. By definition, the CD has value as the home for Whitney’s two last vocal attempts, though neither turns out to be the tragic take one might fear, or the triumphant one fans would pray for. Written and produced by Curtis Mayfield, Sparkle is the soundtrack album for the 1976 Warner Bros. There’s just as unflattering a comparison in the soundtrack’s best known song, “Something He Can Feel.” It sounds frigid next to En Vogue’s version, let alone Aretha Franklin’s drop-dead classic take. It shows particularly on Sparks’ would-be show-stopper, “Love Will.” Her runs and belts lack the fully anchored soul mama shouts you hear from her counterpart: Jennifer Hudson in “Dreamgirls.” They’re not nearly as earthy. Carmen Ejogo, Tika Sumpter and Sparks, who play the would-be Supremes, sound thin, as individuals, and shrill, as a group. Jordin Sparks, left, and Whitney Houston in a scene from ‘Sparkle’ Unfortunately, the singers follow suit. His production more closely mirrors the ’60s sound the film means to ape than Mayfield’s work did, right down to its tinniness. Kelly did just well enough with the melodies of his retro-tunes to squeak. The new disc uses new songs (and production) from another hitmaker, R. The earlier film also cheated by including five hits swiped from its setting’s era (the early ’60s). While the 1976 “Sparkle” included five songs written by the late (who knew a few things about penning classics), the new take brings back just four of those. It also includes the swan song from the doomed Whitney Houston. ![]() In the meantime, we have “Sparkle’s” soundtrack, which carves out a major showcase for ex-“American Idol” star. All this, while serving the narrative needs of musical theater.Īpparently, audiences felt they each did so well enough to inspire an upgrade from theater to film (for “Dreamgirls”) and a movie redo for “Sparkle,” whose reboot arrives in theaters Aug. Miraculously, that high bar didn’t deter the 1976 movie “Sparkle,” or the like-minded Broadway musical that came in its wake, 1981’s “Dreamgirls.” Both try to craft songs that not only could be hits, but which re-create the glory of the girl group and/or Motown era. They’ve got to come up with songs every bit as stunning and indelible as the ones that make the whole world sing. ![]() Updated: Tuesday, July 31, 2012, 6:00 AM Title 'Sparkle: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack' Musicals that pine to tell the story of classic pop groups have their work cut out for them.
